Very tough time of the year! You can get into some fairly good dry fly action right now if you plan early outings. The trico hatch is going strong with great spinner falls but they are really early in the day and are done by 9-9:30. After that a small window of caddis activity but once the sun is up full I don't advise fishing for trout due to the higher water temps. You stress the fish too much. Bass are the main stay but I have not had a great year for them. Best thing you can do this time of year is float in the pool with a cooler full of cold ones.

I couldn't agree more, since almost the begining of July or especially the start of that 2nd week its been BRUTAL for us w/o a boat. Going to try the NYS power authority next trip out, I hear its 1 of the best spots from the shore, anyone been there?

I was at the power authority last night. We fished from the shore not the platform and got nothing. Let me know how you make out. I am determined to get a fish out of there.
Tominator, You are so right. I get so depressed this time of year.

I have been hitting up a lot of the ponds in the area and have had great success with 8lb fluorocarbon rigged with a streamer fly and some small split shot. I had been fishing with the normal bass lures(plastic worms, spinnerbaits) and was having a tough time getting bites. Downsizing to a streamer fly like a woolly bugger and using lighter, "invisible" line has really help increase my catches. Doing this during the hot summer months really helps for trout and bass alike. In the past few days I have been fishing I have caught over 30 thirty bass, mostly largemouth and a few smallmouth, many smaller sized but the bigger ones in the ponds would also hit the fly. I have been using a stop and go retrieve and most fish seem to come on the stop when the fly is slower drifting towards the bottom. I have been using size 2 and 4 buggers in black and olive green. I tied them myself and put in extra marabou in the tall section to really get that pulsing action the retrieve. I'm also going to try using a float rig with a fly next time out maybe tipped with live bait as well.

Float - Interested in selling a few of your custom buggers? I would love to give them a try.

The upper river is always an option.
The breakwall and fish market have fish. Almost every species of wny gamefish at just about any time of year can live there, be big, and get caught. There's normally much more casting and walking than catching but time can pay-off
Further downstream along the sewer plant you can get fish wall trolling. Drop a bigger crankbait over the railing and walk upstream, allowing the strong current to push the lure down. By adjusting the lenght of line from the rod tip you can manipulate the depth at which the lure runs. Big fish hang along the seam near the corrugated steel wall and bottom; waiting to eat stuff shooting past them. Again, fish are by no means jumping on the hook, there's alot of walking, and it can stink like a sewer plant so be warned.
This time of year fishing at night is best.

Smallies in the Genny have been consistent from what little I have been there. Early mornings and evenings, a bit better in the PM. Standard bass fare all good. Big streamers good too.

I don't know about that NYPA platform. The fishing may be great but I'll never know. Only checked it out a couple times and it's just not my scene. Ibanez - try the Whirlpool/Devil's Hole trails or Artpark instead of that platform. Even if you don't hook up at least you'll get some exercise and it's more scenic. I always catch at least a couple of smallmouth every time at said locations. Try jigging tubes or twister tails in the slow pocket water around boulders. If that doesn't work, cast size 3 or 4 vibrax spinners and retrieve them slowly just off the bottom. This is easier said than done but this spinner practice will pay off when the salmon and steelhead move in!
When you don't have a boat and the fishing is slow you have to get creative. Take this time to explore and try some new techniques so that you're more confident in the future. Just a suggestion...........

never fished with a fly before but tied on a #6 (since thats the biggest they sell around here and will have to order the bigger #2,#4 from online) to my spinning rod and reel and caught more fish on this $2.00 lure than any other including all types of panfish, rock bass and a handful of largemouth, nothing bigger than 9" on the Upper River. Had 2 larger 1's hooked but of course the #6 wasn't going to hold'em. The 1 was prob 3-5lbs and wished I had a bigger hook after he jumped and shook it loose. nevertheless IT WORKS and may be my exclusive fishinglure for the summer. Putting a rush order on the #2,4's as these are amazing and fish can't avoid em.
