At one time I picked up every roadkill I could find - Took all the raw bucktails offered - ended up with a mess, infestation/destruction of some expensive necks was the result... If you like that kind of stuff, more power to you. Dubbing is fairly cheep, the professional stuff is colorfast, easy to use, etc. I know there are books on the subject of preparing and dye-ing materials... To me - not worth the bother... I do remember tying up some streamers with some crinkly hair... from a lovely coed that brought back some great memories every time I found them in the fly box...

The nice thing about fly tying is that there are absolutely no rules. You can tie them out of whatever you want, and they will probably catch fish. I have a fly that was tied by a dear late friend who used a feather from an emperor penguin. He got it from a chum who worked in a zoo. He showed the fly to a game warden, who said that he wasn't sure if it was legal to possess such a thing. "Good luck proving that I shot a penguin!" Mark said.

i posted this question in January, and im happy to say that i've used the huskey dubbing with great success. It was easy to spin on the thread and has caught many of trout. The new material ill try and use are the plastic coffee straw. I think i can use them for craw fish patterns.
